NSW's greatest tiny house weekend getaways
Words: Emma Vidgen // @emma_vee
Growing up as a kid in the ‘80s, bigger was synonymous with better, especially when it came to holidays. Whether it was a visit to the Big Pineapple or an awkward family photo in front of the (less-inspiring) Big Prawn, it was an age of excess. Fast forward 30 years and things have changed… a lot. Upsized holidays – and lifestyles – just don’t have the same appeal they once did. Doing more with less is what sparks joy, which might explain why here at The Wayward we have a tiny house obsession. And with the change of season upon us, what better time to daydream about some tiny house holidays? Here are five of our favourites in New South Wales.
Arabella CABN, Kangaroo Valley
Boasting what is surely the most awe-inspiring bath tub in the Southern Hemisphere, if not the world, the Arabella CABN is nestled in Kangaroo Valley a couple of hours south of Sydney. In addition to the glass-encased bath tub (pictured below), there’s a separate cabin that sleeps five guests and an outdoor fire pit. For more info check out www.cabn.life
Unyoked, various locations
With several tiny house locations no more than two hours from Sydney (and another three outside Melbourne), twin brothers Cam and Chris Grant (the masterminds behind Unyoked) are redefining off-grid getaways. Tucked away in secluded spots, all of the Unyoked tiny houses have two things in common: magical surrounds and impeccably appointed interiors. For more info check out unyoked.co .
Tilba Lake Camp, NSW far south coast
There’s a reason Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall chose this area as the location for River Cottage Australia; it might just be the lushest, greenest prettiest country this side of Dorset. Tilba Lake Camp makes the most of the glorious surrounds, with two eco-pods overlooking mountains, ocean and a lake. Each eco pod sleeps a couple comfortably and includes a fridge, microwave oven and stove top, outdoor private fire pit and access to a saltwater pool. For more info check out tilbalakecamp.com.au
The Loft, Mudgee
Drink in the magic of the Cudgegong Valley from the deck of your very own eco home. Set among the trees on a property on the fringes of Mudgee in NSW’s Central West, treat yourself to Italian-brewed coffee in the morning before heading off to eat your way around this delicious corner of the world. Tallarook Tiny Home, NSW South Coast
Set on 50 acres on the NSW South Coast, Tallarook Tiny House is a little slice of civilisation among the trees. Take a load off and drink in the serenity from your architecturally-designed tiny house deck, or get amongst the action with kayaking and bushwalking to boot. Sleeps three.
