Horoscopes for December 2019
Words: Emma Vidgen // @emma_vee
The astrology of December 2019 is nothing if not earthy. While party season may technically be in full swing and the sun shines in fiery, outgoing Sagittarius for the first few weeks, the month kicks off with – and continues to build a whole lot of Capricorn energy.
Getting into a party mood may be a little more difficult than usual because Capricorn is always thinking about the medium to long term. Goals, work and structure are key themes, which are incredibly productive… but also a bit of a buzz kill.
There’s no use fighting it, just remember when you find yourself bailing on the office Christmas party before 10, there’s an astrological reason you’re suddenly feeling sensible.
The energy is a continuation of the story unfolding throughout this year’s eclipses and south node in Capricorn transits. Chances are they’ve reopened up plenty of old wounds you were surprised still hurt as much as they did.
Now with Jupiter moving out of Sagittarius and into Capricorn for the next 12 months, the challenge is to envisage new possibilities and adventures building on what you’ve learned, hurt and hopefully healed in 2019.

ARIES AND ARIES RISING
The silly season is tempered by a generous dose of steadiness this year thanks to a planetary pile up in Capricorn. The focus on your professional life will be palpable, with a new injection of inspiration and opportunity from 2 December. This marks the beginning of a new 12 month cycle, and will build on the groundwork laid over the past year. The full moon in Gemini (12 December) will lighten the mood but the potential for you or those around you to be a little tactless will be high. Take a moment to reflect on long-term goals for your work on 26th when a new moon eclipse offers potent energy for change and professional evolution.
TAURUS AND TAURUS RISING
December may traditionally be a time for letting loose but don’t be surprised if you’re distracted by dreams of travel or learning. The beginning of a fresh year-long cycle kicks off on 2 December, marking the start of an abundant new period, inviting opportunity for growth and expansion around adventure, education and broadening your horizons – it could be moving to a new place or deciding to go back to uni. Chances are these themes have been in the mix for you since January, but after a year of refining your vision, this fresh start offers the chance to grow something new. The full moon in Gemini (12 December) is a good opportunity to shed dead wood around your finances – check your direct debits and audit your expenses. Meanwhile the new moon on 26 December invites you to take time out to reflect on what you want to build over the next 12 months. The progress won’t necessarily be fast but if anyone has the patience and persistence to stick with a long-term goal its you!
GEMINI AND GEMINI RISING
This silly season may not be the non-stop party you look forward to each year, but rest assured a change is coming. This year has likely featured some pretty heavy terrain – money, power, sex, all the juicy stuff – that triggered old hang-ups and brought tension to your day-to-day life. But 2 December brings a new energy to the story that’s been playing out since January, offering the opportunity for expansion, abundance and achievement. Things may not happen as quickly as you’d like but rest assured they will change. Take a break from all the seriousness and let off some steam on the 12th under the Gemini full moon (warning: propensity for foot-in-mouth is high). The eclipse on 26 December ushers in a new chapter and invites you to reflect on what’s possible for 2020 so try and make some time to get away and find stillness amid the celebrations, even if it’s just for 10 minutes.
CANCER AND CANCER RISING
This year has not been easy with eclipses hitting you harder than most. Adding to the drama, you may have felt overwhelmed with either too many opportunities or too much responsibility on the work front. Things may feel a little less scattered come December 2, when a new 12 month cycle kicks off, bringing a fresh focus to your one-on-one relationships. Despite the party feels of the full moon in Gemini on the 12th, you’ll probably feel like laying low. Go with it and stay in, or at least leave the party early to ponder what you’re happy to leave behind in 2019. A new moon eclipse on the 26th beckons a fresh start and a new focus on relationships. What do you want to build together this next year? Eclipse energy can be emotionally charged so tread carefully, especially with those closest to you.
LEO AND LEO RISING
No one likes a party like Leo but this silly season has a noticeably more serious mood thanks to a bunch of heavy-hitting planets hanging out in steady Capricorn. Your creativity, sense of fun and joie de vivre has been off piste since late November last year, now on 2 December the focus will take a serious shift to everyday topics like work, your health and your daily routine. The eclipses of the past 12 months have touched on these subjects already, now you’ll have a chance to broaden your horizons and brave new territory on these fronts. A full moon in Gemini will be a welcome escape from all the adulting on 12 December, although be aware that people may be a little more tactless than usual. The 26th is the perfect time to start thinking new year’s resolutions when a new moon eclipse lights invites you to reflect on how to start building on your long-term health and work goals. If you’ve been toying with the idea of a new habit or routine, this a great time to try and nut it out.
VIRGO AND VIRGO RISING
There’s a sombre flavour to the festive season this year with an unseasonable amount of earthy energy in the sky triggering you to think about long-term goals. Luckily, earthy and sensible are your middle name so it won’t phase you like some other signs. While the sun brings a focus to your home and family life, a new cycle kicks off on the 2 December ushering in a new era of expansion around your creativity. The eclipses of 2019 likely had you thinking about how you express yourself creatively, now this new phase beckons you to broaden your horizons and seize opportunities to have more fun – whether that’s learning how to play an instrument or simply having more (or more fulfilling) sex – over the next 12 months. A full moon in Gemini will lighten the mood but could see people being a little more direct than usual at work. After Christmas, a new moon eclipse on the 26th invites you to reflect on how you’re actually going to turn your creative ambitions into a reality in 2020. Put your organisational skills to good use and get to work brainstorming how you can prioritise fun in the year ahead.
LIBRA AND LIBRA RISING
This year has been a big one for you with the eclipses in January and July causing plenty of tension between your professional path and home life. Home and family are set to take an even greater focus this month (and beyond) with the beginning of a new 12 month cycle kicking off 2 December. This new phase will see a positive, expansive energy lighting up the realm of home and family, bringing plenty of opportunities to build on the changes you’ve been thinking about making this year. A full moon on the 12th will have you in the mood to party or maybe even get away for the weekend while the new moon eclipse on 26th is a good time to lay low and reflect on what you want to manifest on the home front for 2020 and beyond.
SCORPIO AND SCORPIO RISING
Expressing yourself, being heard but also, listening – really listening – have been central themes this year, with the eclipses in January and July likely triggering events that brought them to the forefront. Now on 2 December a new 12 month cycle begins, where opportunities to learn, expand and grow in these areas will come your way. It’s heavy but rewarding work, although it may not be immediately gratifying. Patience is a virtue – and a necessity. Watch out for tensions around money with your partner on the full moon (12 December) when running your mouth off will be especially easy. The eclipse on the 26 ushers in a fresh start – now is the time to reflect on how to start making good on all those long-term goals you’ve been thinking about setting this past year so you can begin the climb in 2020.
SAGITTARIUS AND SAGITTARIUS RISING
This year has been a mixed bag for you. On one hand there’s been a heaviness weighing down on your financial front. At the same time you’ve had opportunities to really expand and evolve on a soul level. Who you are and how you present yourself to the world – be it your physicality or email signature, right through to your soul identity – has likely had quite a reboot. It may have all felt overwhelming or a little scattered, but things should start to feel more focussed from 2nd December. This marks the beginning of a new year-long period where you’ll see opportunity to get clear and foster new growth around self-worth and money. It’s all rather serious stuff but a full moon on the 12th will bring some festive cheer (just be aware there’s high potential for foot-in-mouth, especially with your partner and closest friends). The new moon eclipse on 26th is decidedly more sombre but offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on all the old baggage you’ve shed this year, and what you’re ready to call in over the next 12 months, especially where cash is concerned.
CAPRICORN AND CAPRICORN RISING
While the eclipses of 2019 have likely triggered all kinds of drama in your personal life and closest relationships, you’ve also been dealing with Jupiter in Sagittarius, which brought an expansive but scattered quality to your subconscious. While the focus on who you are and how you move through the world will continue next year, things will be a bit less erratic – starting from 2 December. This marks the beginning of a 12 month cycle where some much-needed positivity will lighten the mood and bring some opportunities for growth and expansion especially around your identity, body and mind. The serious mood will be alleviated by the Gemini full moon on the 12th, although your workmates might be a little less tactful than usual (sage advice if your office Christmas party falls around the time). The eclipse on 26 brings a new moon beckoning you to reflect on how far you’ve come this year, and what long-term goals you want to set for the next. You’re in the midst of a major life change, embrace the energy and aim high – you’ve got this.
AQUARIUS AND AQUARIUS RISING
While this year may have brought joy and abundance in the social stakes, it hasn’t been without its challenges. A heaviness, particularly activated around the eclipses in January and July has weighed heavily on your mind. Perhaps you’ve questioned everything you believe, or been in the grips of an existential crisis. While the mood isn’t necessarily lighter, a new cycle kicking off 2 December. Over the next 12 months, opportunities to connect with your intuition and deepen spiritual practices will have a profound impact. It’s not for the faint-hearted, and a pretty serious start to the silly season but a full moon on the 12th will have you feeling pumped to let your hair down. If you’ve been holding onto old ideas around the way you express yourself creatively, now is the time to set them free. Meanwhile, the new moon eclipse on the 26th marks a fresh start, and is the perfect time to meditate on what habits you’d like to cultivate to connect with your intuition in 2020.
PISCES AND PISCES RISING
On 2 December a new 12 month cycle begins, which sees abundant, expansive energy move into the area governing your social life and community. You might have felt lost this past 12 months. Having a sense of belonging, and understanding where you “fit in” in the world has been a recurring theme this year, with the eclipses in January and July dredging up old hurts and asking you what (or who) is ready to be released. Now this new cycle will bring opportunities for growth and expansion, preparing you to build on what you’ve learned about who you want to call a friend, and where you choose to fit in. You’ll have a little respite around the 12th when the full moon in Gemini makes for festive cheer although you may want to watch your words, especially at home as the energy is very conducive to foot-in-mouth moments. Two weeks later the eclipse on the new moon in Capricorn asks you to reflect on how you want to build and strengthen your place with friends and within community.
